Commander Venture 2 - Commander Starter Decks

Isperia, Supreme Judge, Atarka, World Render, Command Tower

Wizards of the Coast has come out with a new batch of 5 Commander decks in December of 2022, this means we get to add one of these decks to our COMMANDER VENTURE POOL! I’m going to do a quick run down of the 3 decks I felt confident in leaving on the shelf just to get them out of the way.

Token Triumph
I don’t normally play White Green, this level of battlecruiser magic doesn't stay fun for me for long. The focus of my board often gives me tunnel vision on what I'm doing which makes me miss plays and discount what my opponent may be doing. Additionally, while I know this deck has some good synergy, the only individual card that really sticks out to me is Path to Exile and that card alone isn’t worth the deck.

Emmara, Soul of the Accord

Grave Danger
While based on the colors I thought maybe this would be my deck, I quickly realized the main theme being Zombies may be too much of a build around, and in adding to my pool this early I wanted my choice to give me more general utility and I didn’t think that overall this deck would give me as much as the others. This isn't to discount the power of cards like Fleshbag Marauder, Vampiric Rites and Midnight Reaper which would have been a good addition to the pool.

Gisa and Geralf

Chaos Incarnate
I’ll be honest, I almost picked this deck. Sepulchral Primordial, Archfiend of Depravity, and Vampire Nighthawk are all great and I have connections to them as they’ve all won drafts for me in the past. This deck would have also added Guttersnipe and Thermo-Alchemist which would have been VERY good if I ever felt the spellslinger direction was the way to go. Fiery Confluence, Chaos Warp, Abrade, and Terminate are all strong cards that I’ve used in commander decks in the past, and it was the utility of those cards that made this deck a pretty strong contender, but in the end I felt the last two both fit my playstyle better and would add cards to my pool that would give me a wider selection of options down the line.

Kardur, Doomscourge

First Flight and Draconic Destruction
These decks were honestly a tossup so I’m just going to go though some cards I liked HEAD TO HEAD and make my cases for both in order to show my process…

Scourge of Valkas VS Sephara, Sky's Blade

Sephara, Sky's Blade vs Scourge of Valkas

Sephara is a 7 cost 7 / 7 with Flying and Lifelink and some abilities that get her out early and buffs your team.
Scourge of Valkas is a 5 drop 4 / 4 with a CRAZY ETB ability. “Whenever Scourge of Valkas or another Dragon enters the battlefield under your control, it deals X damage to any target, where X is the number of Dragons you control.” This plus a tacked on Fire Breathing ability and flying make this card the clear winner for this round.

Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker VS Gideon Jura

Gideon Jura vs Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker
Both of these walkers are STRONG! They were both standard allstars at one point, and have amazing abilities that make either one a great pick. The Minus ability on both of them can take out creatures and they both turn into indestructible dudes. Gideon’s zero ability is what puts him over the top, the fact that he can come out and has 3 methods of protection gives more utility in the long run. The winner is Gideon.

Swiftfoot Boots VS Hedron Archive

Swiftfoot Boots vs Hedron Archive

Hedron Archive gives a lot of utility. Being a 4 drop mana rock isn’t always ideal, but with X spells like Sphinx's Revelation in the pool and with other X spells to come, the 2 colorless it produces could be very strong. Additionally drawing 2 cards can sometimes make or break a game… All that said, It can’t beat Haste and Hexproof in this creature-heavy format. The winner is Swiftfoot Boots.

Fires of Yavimaya VS Favorable Winds

Fires of Yavimaya vs Favorable Winds

Both of these cards are very good in almost any deck; they are both “anthem” effects that buff my board and are reasonably priced. While you do have to sacrifice Fires, normally you’re swinging in with a few creatures, however being only two mana and 1 color overtakes the fact that Winds only affects flyers, and is the deciding factor for Favorable Winds to me.

Beast Within VS Generous Gift

Beast Within vs Generous Gift

I know what you’re thinking “Iggy these are functionally the same card!” but I’m going to use this slot to talk about the Instant and Sorcery suite as a whole. To keep it simple both decks have VERY powerful removal in cards like Swords to Plowshares and Sweltering Suns, and both have good advantage spells, however the land fetch spells like Cultivate make green a very versatile color so in this case due to that, Beast Within wins.

All this being said, I went to my LGS ready to buy the Draconic Destruction deck. I was also happy that one of my favorite cards, Thundermaw Hellkite was in the deck and was already thinking about what strategies I could use for the Venture. I walked in, looked at the inventory, and the store was out of the Atarka deck. So, I went with Isperia. Sometimes “them’s the beats”. In the future if I want a specific deck I’ll go hunting for it, these decks were SO close for me, and I have always liked “Blue White Skies” as a deck type and I’m happy to get the Blue White Flyers.

Isperia, Supreme Judge

Next time I’ll be updating my full pool, and talking about some of the sweet cards I’m getting from my Jumpstart games.
