Commander Venture 4 Pool and Deck Update 1

The Friday that the Commander Starter Decks came out, I was able to play a commander pod for some promo packs. We all played with the decks we just bought and had a pretty good 3 rounds. The First Flight deck was pretty good, I wasn’t able to “Pop Off” with it like I may have wanted to. It was a little slow without as much card draw as I would have liked, but it was fun all the same. After our games I got a Non Foil promo pack and opened… An offer you can’t refuse, Academic Probation, and Xander's Lounge. One of my opponents immediately set down his trade binder and I was able to make a trade for Xander’s Lounge. I accepted and added this lot of cards to my pool: Preordain, Brainstorm, Hofri Ghostforge, The Royal Scions, Vadrok, Apex of Thunder, Tyrant’s Familiar, Jaxis, the Troublemaker, Electrolyze.


Being a buyer for a store, I haven’t been able to just take a look through a binder to find cards I’d like for a LONG time. It was nice to take a second to really look at cards I may have wanted to play, not just poke at for value. So with these new cards in mind, and the large pool of White, Blue and Red that I have at my disposal, let’s build Vadrok, Apex of Thunder.

Vadrok’s colors are the main thing I’m looking at here. It’s ability is useful in that I have non-creature spells in the deck and most of those are CMC 3 or less, but the Red White and Blue color identity works very well for the cards I have in my pool. I do see some synergy in this card being able to mutate onto tokens, and some creatures like Pilgrims Eye that just come in and sit for a while, but I'm not building the deck around mutating Vadrok over and over… YET. So first things first I sorted my pool into colors, then I sorted the White, Blue, Red, Artifacts, Lands and Multicolored cards into CMC and went though each stack, picked out the “playables” and found that a Jeskai “Flyers matter” deck may be the best bet. This is what I came up with.

 

Game Plan
This deck wins with a wide creature based strategy. Early game I want to build up lands and make a small unassuming board presence. Getting early game advantage with cards like Skyscanner and Burnished Hart is important to ensure my mid / late game can go off. Getting some of my lords and other utility creatures like Favorable Winds and Jubilant Skybounder will keep my board safe from some removal and other creatures until my big boys can come out. Hopefully I’ll get some attacks in with Chaos Dragon and Sprite Dragon will keep the other players on their toes and they might even bait out some removal spells so they don’t hit my bombs.

Midgame I hope to have enough of a creature advantage to throw out Warmonger Hellkite and Thunder Dragon to over run my opponents. If that’s answered then I plan to just play bomb after bomb and try to get in where I can. Niv, Astral Dragon and Sephara are all powerful creatures that can easily swing the game in my favor. I’m in a little trouble if we move too far into a longer game. I don’t really have a sweeper in my card pool, so far it’s just a pretty “fair” deck. I will be on the lookout for something to work with Midnight Guard that just ENDS THE GAME, but as of now, he’s not in the deck.

I think this deck is Okay. I want to go over my pool after playing a couple of games to see if there’s something a little stronger I can build out of it, maybe use some different colors than I normally do. We’ll see what the next few Jumpstart Games and Drafts might have in store for me!
